GeoStream Server System Requirements

This topic describes the system requirements for the GeoStream Server component. Figures outlined in this topic should be taken as a guide.

Required Software

  • GeoStream requires a web server which can act as an ASP.NET container, supporting .NET 4.0 or higher.

We recommend the use of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6 or higher. All documentation is provided with the assumption of an IIS deployment.

Required hardware:

For a typical production environment, we recommend dedicated server grade hardware with multi-core 64-bit CPU(s), at least 8Gb RAM, and sufficient fast conventional disk storage to maintain a large tile cache. However, depending on the scale of your application and which GeoStream features are being used, GeoStream may run comfortably on lighter hardware or virtualized solutions, or alternatively may require higher grade hardware.

When planning server specifications, it is important to consider that different GeoStream features place stress on different aspects of server hardware:

  • Forward & Reverse GeoCoding - bound by CPU. Reverse GeoCoding is very lightweight.

  • Routing - bound by RAM. At the top end, multi-stop, cross-continental routes can use ~1-1.5GB. Performance will also benefit from fast I/O to the GBFS files; this can be achieved either by ensuring there is sufficient RAM for GBFS files to be cached, or utilising SSD storage.

  • Tile Generation & Serving - generation of tiles is bound by speed of I/O to the GBFS file, and in high load situations, by CPU. I/O performance can be enhanced by either placing GBFS files on SSD storage, or ensuring that there is sufficient RAM to allow GBFS to be cached in memory. For storing and serving cached map tiles, fast conventional disk is recommended, as SSD is not cost effective for storage of a large cache. A RAID array of fast (10K or 15K RPM) conventional disks will provide a good balance of price and performance.
